People obviously do not go on holiday expecting to fall ill, but it is always useful to know ahead of time what to do if you or a loved one does need medical attention while away.
All European citizens can get a European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) before travelling. You can apply for one, free of charge online at: www.ehic.org.uk, or by telephone on 0845 6062030, or you can pick up an application form from the post office.
The EHIC entitles you to state provided healthcare within Spain and all EEA countries free of charge or at a reduced cost.
Bear in mind though that in Spain patients, (including residents of Spain) may still have to pay some costs towards treatment. You can get a receipt and try to claim these costs back.
There is a good state provided Medical Centre in Santa Ponsa, next to the Catholic church.
They will accept you as a patient with your EHIC card, but make sure that you present it on arrival. You may be asked for photo identification too, so it´s a good idea to bring a copy of your passport or drivers license.
There is a brand new public hospital with top doctors and facilities in Mallorca, should your problem be more serious:
Hospital Universitari Son Espases
If you do not have your EHIC card with you and you need medical attention, you will have to pay for private care while in Mallorca.
There are many good private doctors in Santa Ponsa and if you have travel insurance you can claim costs back once you get home (depending of course, on the type of insurance you have).
If for any reason your needs are more serious, there are a number of very good private hospitals on the island.
Farmacias
There are also a number of chemists in Santa Ponsa (Farmacias). They are easily spotted by the big green cross they use as a symbol. The pharmacists speak English, and are very helpful, but it is obviously not recommended to use these as a substitute for a doctor.
